The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of implementing literary debates on the development of oral communicative competence and argumentative ability in high school students. The study population consisted of 30 students. Data were collected through systematic and structured observation, and an analytic oral assessment rubric was designed and applied as the instrument. The study followed a quantitative approach, with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, and descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the results. The initial findings revealed low performance in the three evaluated dimensions, especially in communicative anxiety control and in the formulation of well-founded opinions. After the pedagogical intervention, a significant improvement was observed in students’ performance. The elocutionary dimension increased from 2.05 to 4.20 points; the linguistic-pragmatic dimension rose from 2.40 to 4.05; and the logical-argumentative dimension increased from 1.85 to 3.53 points. These findings allow us to conclude that literary debates constitute an effective didactic strategy for strengthening oral expression and argumentation, as they favor clearer, more coherent, and better-supported interventions. Consequently, it is recommended that this methodology be systematically incorporated into the teaching of Language and Literature.
